Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Vol. 1 by Dan Slott

This book was ok but also kind of pissed me off. The description on the back cover and the bonus material all made such hay over how this was a return to Spidey basics and a great time for fans to come back. Marvel, what??? Yall were the ones who decided to have a Civil War and reveal Spidey's identity. Yall were the ones who wanted Peter to not be married anymore. It was just a very whiplash experience to finish JMS's last issue, 545, and read all the sincere goodbyes and then pick up the next volume 546 and read all the backhanded comments.

I just wonder more and more about JMS's final issues and how much creative freedom he had. His run wasn't perfect (whose is???) but he injected the Spidey mythos with great fun and intriguing ideas. Even his penultimate arc, about the fallout of Civil War and Kingpin's hit on Aunt May pushed Spidey in great new directions. What happens when a good man has a bad day? Doctor Who would later mine this as well but it was fantastic to see Parker act reckless and pushed to his breaking point and realize he still has limits and lines he won't cross even if he got too close to them
