Amok by Stefan Zweig

4.0

This is probably not my favorite Zweig novel I’ve read so far, but that doesn’t mean the writing in it was less skilled. I continue to be impressed by Zweig’s writing. From historical fiction to coming of age stories to dealing with hot button topics, Zweig’s writing seems to delve into personalities and mental processes. And he is adept at it. The three novellas I’ve read from him so far have been vastly different, yet still have that common thread of probing into thoughts of the character(s) and the mental processes they go through. In Amok, Zweig presents a main character who struggles between duty and emotions; and he portrays this struggle with intensity. Like I already said, not my favorite Zweig work thus far; but still very well written and gets a full 4 stars from me.
