Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

4.5

I really liked this book. I felt for Kya and found her story compelling and heartbreaking and beautiful. Also, I love Tate so so much. This book is not a murder mystery. It's just not. I did find myself curious about who did it in like the final quarter of the book when it actually became relevant, but I mostly cared about Kya and her freedom. This book is the story of a Marsh girl's life first, and a story of a murder trial second. Nowhere is it some big crime-solving mystery book. As for the actual murder...
I WAS SO SURE IT WAS TATE. I suspected it may be him at first, but then as time went on I was more and more sure it was him. But then I was thinking, he wouldn't let Kya go on trial and stay in jail and potentially be executed; he would have for sure admitted to the crime. But the evidence that it was him just made so much sense. After Kya was declared innocent, I literally forgot to care about who murdered Chase. I moved on, just like all the other characters. The sudden jump into the future gave me whiplash because she was like "and they were happy. anyways 40 years later tate found her dead in a boat" and I was like GIRL WHAT-- and then... let's just say I was NOT prepared for that last page.
But yeah. If you want an interesting book about a Marsh Girl's life that will make you kinda depressed, this is the one! Also wow this book has a lot of content warnings. I would say to read them before you decide to pick up this book!
