I feel like I might be needing a break from YA for a while. I had high expectations for this one because a lot of people seem to love it. I thought it was a good read but it didn’t blow me away, like everyone else.

“Love is a powerful thing, more powerful than blood, although both run through us like a river.”

I really liked the premise of this. We are talking about Arthurian, magic, demons, and all that fun. It’s pretty interesting stuff but I think maybe too much was going on. I did have a bit of trouble trying to put it together and understand. There’s a lot of info dumping. The thing I hate about info dumping is that it makes it much more difficult for me to grasp and it pulls me from the story. There are lot of things that make this world really hard to follow and understand.

I absolutely love the fact that this books takes on a lot of important issues. For example, oppression, racism, and grief. A lot of this book deals with a lot of grief, from multiple characters. There’s a lot of politics in here that I think people are going to either love or hate. I mean.. a lot of it is applicable to our current world view and I think it’s important to shine a light on.

“Don’t make your life about the loss. Make it about the love.”

There is some INSTANT love in this book and I really can’t stand that. There’s actually a few things that were too instant that I didn’t buy. Not only the love story but the whole arc of Bree. Where she ends up when she knows nothing about this world, just didn’t really sit well with me. There’s a lot of predictability too. There’s also a set up for a love triangle, which is another trope I hate.

I didn’t think the actual plot was bad, I quite enjoyed it. There’s a lot of things that need to be unpacked and I’m thinking that’s what we will get in book two. The ending was good even if it was easy to figure out. I would love to know a lot more about Bree’s actual magic. I am undecided if I will continue this series.
