Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng
3.0

A delightfully creepy read full of eerie atmosphere, the worn staples of gothic fiction made anew, and of course, the Fey! You know, those creepy bastards obsessed with magical wordplay and stealing away human children for reasons best left unexamined. Despite this novel being a really good debut for a newcomer, there are some flaws. The most pressing one would have to be that the pacing can get weird and uncomfortably slow, especially after the major events. Another flaw is that I found the constant use of alternate history excerpts from people like John Locke or made up characters a bit annoying. I'd rather hear what the characters think of the universe rather than somebody way far off. However, there were interesting and did make the worldbuilding feel more expansive despite the limited setting of this novel.
