The Rycke by Lily Mayne
5.0

Aury is the softest, gentlest creature you’ve ever met. He needs to be wrapped in a thousand blankets and protected from everyone who ever tried to hurt him. Aury is quiet and shy, unassuming and so caring. He is the only person to see past Ghost’s defences and soothe his hurts and worries. Alive for over 700 years and kept captive and tortured by the military for most of the time since the rift opened, Aury has been through so much. Somehow, he still manages to be probably the sweetest cinnamon roll you’ve ever met. Prepare for scenes of taking care of Ghost while he is sick including snuggles and soup, and giving cuddles to all the chickens in the coop (not a weird euphemism). Aury would absolutely give his life for Ghost and be happy to do so.

Speaking of Ghost, let me introduce you to the guy who is anxious about everything and is therefore the most relatable character ever. Ghost is shy and quiet, and always feels like he has to be useful or he is going to be kicked out of camp. Which means he never takes any time for himself and has nobody to really look after him until Aury. Ghost cares fiercely about his friends and protects those he cares about, often to his own detriment. He isn’t perfect - he can struggle to see beyond his own point of view especially when it comes to gut reactions or working people out, so he is a little harsh in his view of both Lilac and Moth - but it just makes him more human and real, which shows how brilliant Lily’s writing really is.

Aury and Ghost are wonderful together. Aury soothes Ghost’s anxieties and calls him on his bullshit when necessary; Ghost helps Aury be brave and quiets the turmoil in his mind. Aury defends Ghost and his possessive nature provides Ghost with the reassurance he has always needed. Ghost’s wholehearted acceptance and longing for Aury calms Aury’s fears and lets him feel at peace and happy for the first time ever. They enjoy just spending quiet time together reading or being in each other’s presence, looking after the chickens, cuddling or - let’s face it - having super hot and very connective sex. Their bond runs so deep and it’s really beautifully written.

The Rycke is also the first book where we get to spend time in a raider camp rather than on the road and it’s really interesting to see this side of Lily’s post apocalyptic world and how humans are coping with limited resources and space. Tensions are high and there is a lot more to worry about in terms of social interaction and keeping the peace. The found family is also starting to really introduce itself to us, with Rig, Lilac and Moth all appearing as side characters in this book alongside a wonderful cast of raiders that really bring the world to life. We also get to meet several more different types of monsters on Ghost’s trips out into the wastes! As always this is fascinating and I love seeing Ghost’s little adventures (which he absolutely hates, sorry Ghost).

The Rycke is a wonderful addition to the Monstrous series and one of my favourites - ok so I think that about all of them, but I really adore Aury and Ghost. I find them both extremely relatable as an introverted anxious gremlin myself. Another fantastic book, so make sure you check out the series today, starting with Soul Eater!
