The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
4.0

A fairy tale about lies.

I had a big issue with the book in that it deceived me; the end of the book was a different tone, scope, and meaning than the beginning. The shift was sort of set up, but not really, and there are lots of things that get tacked on toward the end that feel like they came out of nowhere. (Tigers as a theme, for example.) I normally hate this sort of thing with a passion.

But, in general, I was kind of blah on the first half of the book but much more satisfied with the second half of the book, so I was briefly annoyed, then settled in to enjoy it, with only a few minor "where did that come from?" moments afterward. On the whole I liked it.

There's a conflict between a twee world of adoramonsters and well-intentioned witches, and a dark, foggy world that reminded me of The Giver. If that sounds interesting, give the book a try.
