Our House by Louise Candlish
4.0

How would you feel if you came home from a trip and found out that other people are living in your house? Not renting, but actually bought your home and it is now their home.

And, this has been your home for the last 10 years with your sons and husband, who you are currently estranged from.

So, what would you do?

Well, in this case, Fi, our main protagonist, who is facing this situation is in shock. So, real estate agents, lawyers and police are summoned.

And what Fi discovers is that her husband, Bram, who she has been separated from, has sold the house from under her, to this couple. Of course, Fi’s signature is forged, but the deal is done.

Now what?

This becomes the art of the author. She creates a novel that takes the time to explain how this situation occurred. (No spoilers from me.)

The author shares in an interview that this “literary thriller” was inspired by a case of property fraud she read about in a London newspaper.

So, did the story work?

The story tackles betrayal, guilt and relationships that go wrong. For those who like domestic thrillers, this may be a binge-worthy story of secrets to unravel. With an unexpected ending.

The question will be, how will readers feel when they turn that last page?

For me, I was in disbelief. I felt frustration and shock. And perhaps that was brilliant on the author’s part to make me so vested in the story, to have these feelings. And thankfully, it wasn’t a cliffhanger. If it were, you would hear about it from me!
