The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
4.5

This would have been a 5 star read weren't it for a few, tiny things.
Some of the interactions were too straight-cut, too fast to the gist of it. E.g. when they woke up Jiang. There was too little confusion or mystery or tries to stop him from going back. Overall that scene felt rushed and useless.
Something I especially noticed towards the end of the book was the use of "so/so that". There was a lot and it hindered the flow of the text, tho it is something I can oberlook, considering how GOOD this story is.

It's a fantastic book but a heavy read, especially with the contents of Chapter 21 (regard the content warnings of this book). Knowing only little about the history Poppy War is based on, I cannot draw all the parallels but the ones I saw and understood were heartbreaking and horrible, if well executed.
It's definitely worth a read if you're a fan of historically inspired Fantasy with a lot of hate, a lot of rage and morally questionable characters, who sometimes are nothing more but pawns in the grand scheme of things.
