Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

4.0

⭐️ 3.5

After a very quick, fast two book love affair where I quickly became obsessed with Colleen Hoover, this book is a reminder that nobody's perfect. Which is fine, she has enough books I don't have to be obsessed with all of them. Overall, I still enjoyed it though.

It's a Love, Like, Hate, Like, Hate, Like, ? Relationship
By which I mean, I have absolutely no idea how I feel about Ridge, having finished the book. I really liked him. As the book progressed, at one point, I absolutely H A T E D him. Now I ??? him.

The Good
- I went into the book cold, knowing nothing about the plot beforehand (I went on a 'hold' spree on Libby after I realized I was obsessed with her books), and it was a pleasant surprise to find out Spoilerthat Ridge is deaf. It's something that I really wasn't expecting. I'd never read a book with a deaf main character before (I'm not sure I've read one with any deaf characters before?), and it was really cool.

- I really enjoyed Sydney and Warren's friendship.

- I also loved Warren and Bridgette's relationship.

- I'm the kind of person who enjoys the 'we're meant to be but can't be together' angst/longing/tension, and there was plenty in this book.

The Bad
- There were a couple of jokes that really rubbed me the wrong way.

- The pacing/timelines felt a little confusing. It was hard to tell how much time was passing and so it all felt like it happened incredibly fast.

- The characterization of both Ridge and Sydney. As things progressed, Ridge got incredibly manipulative and selfish, and it was hard for me to want to root for them. Additionally, Sydney didn't feel fully fleshed out. Aside from Tori, did she have any other friends? If so, I have no idea, because they were literally never mentioned once. Most of her personality was just wanting Ridge.

- I know other reviews have mentioned this, but for someone who was so heartbroken over being cheated on, she definitely had no problem crossing that line pretty damn quickly. Even if they only kissed once, there was a whole hell of a lot of emotional cheating and Spoiler"here is this deep dark secret I've never told anyone before, not even Maggie..."

Read If…
- You, like me, enjoy the "we're in love but we can't be together" trope
- You like Colleen Hoover's other books AND none of the 'don't read if' comments turn you off.

Don't Read If…
- You have no tolerance for cheaters, even if it's ~*complicated*~
- You really hate when songs are written into books
- Or the 'we fell in love making beautiful music' trope
