Defy the Stars
by Claudia Gray
I’m pretty new to the sci-fi genre but I find that the more I read the more I enjoy. Defy the Stars was one that got me taking the next step into enjoying the genre. You could see the progression of the plot, the purposefully slow and steady build-up of the romance, and growth of the characters as the story went along.
None of the characters (even the extremely minor ones) were ever forgotten which was nice because a lot of authors tend to just add minor characters and then dispose of them.
The ending was a big surprise for me. I didn’t expect it to end the way it did. It was original in a way that I expected something cliché but didn’t get that (twice) in the same ending.
My only note is that too much time, I feel, was spent on a certain day and event and not enough on everything else. Also I had mixed feelings about Noemi almost the entire book. I think if the book had been told in 1st person and jumping off of perspectives instead of 3rd I might have been able to better understand her at times. Overall, however, I enjoyed this book and would recommend reading it.
You’ll like Defy the Stars if you liked:
- The Illuminae Files
- The Lunar Chronicles
- The Diabolic
- Carve the Mark
- Divergent
