Star ratings arent always the best way of evaluating what you're read. Fitting occasional sentences of genius, passages that just feel too long, language that captures a moment and then wrapping it into a rating just feels wrong. Is this a five star novel in the sense that it's the best I've ever read? No. Is it even the best that Ali Smith has ever written? I don't think so. But by giving it a sub five star rating, will some people avoid it because it doesn't seem like a good use of their time? I think so. And it definitely is a good use of your time. It's certainly not perfect. Too long, sometimes confusing, but with sentences, paragraphs and pages that work just so perfectly - I've read more than enough 3 star guff to know that those moments are worth the extra 2 stars for sure.
