Vampire Knight, Vol. 1 by Matsuri Hino

2.0

The idea is interesting and the characters unique enough to tell apart. However it feels very contrived and the main character seems to have little personality aside from 'is this recklessly brave'?
Zero has probably the only complex character you'll find and even that is rather shallow. Kaname seems to have little personality that goes beyond 'I am a strong silent type' and 'I am your leader don't make me fight you'.

Spoilers from here-
This is going in to later books, but the background of certain characters is added almost as though they were going for shock value and drama instead of any form of believability. Most of the characters' reactions and personalities change on a dime depending on what the writer needs for the plot to advance in he way they want it to.
Any drawbacks that affect the characters- see Zero's projected descent into madness- generally have a cure that takes less time (aside from necessary yaoi-esque shots) than explaining the issue in the first place.
