treereader 's review for:
Shantaram
by Gregory David Roberts
Well the person who reccomended this to me absolutely loved it, and glancing at the goodreads reviews there seem to be mainly 1 or 5 star. You loved it or you hated it.
But I'm ever the outlier.
Yes, I liked it. It felt brutally honest in places and the characters were superbly drawn. (Prabaker definitely a fave!) However, and I think this is because it's a true story, the plot is messy and there isn't much of a story arc. It just keeps continuing - and that's life, I guess. This book was good, I just didn't find it as mindboggling as many others have.
I especially got a very vivid picture of Mumbai. The slum stuff especially was fascinating and a wonderful insight into another world.
Reminded me of [b:The Name of the Wind|186074|The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1)|Patrick Rothfuss|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1515589515i/186074._SX50_.jpg|2502879] - OP protagonist, and Denna and Karla seemed VERY similar to me, in their characters as well as actions.
