A long book but with short chapters that make it less overwhelming to read, this is a pretty gripping kid's fantasy. I've never seen Mulan, so I don't know how it relates, and there's an aspect of the ending that's unsatisfying (prequels can be challenging). I'm not sure how I feel about a Newbery author setting up the backstory for a new villain appearing in the live action remake... but also, not sure this is a thing I should be judging. There are some references to wildly inappropriate adult relationships.
