Please Ignore Vera Dietz
by A.S. King
I would say that this book has nothing in it that you cannot find in other contemporary YA novels except for one thing and that's the story of Vera's dad. Having Ken Dietz tell his story along with Vera is very effective in that some of the things that we have to deal with (the "baggage") weren't caused by us but we have to deal with it all the same.
It also got me thinking how little I actually know about my own parents. I've lived with them for seventeen years in the same house and I know only enough about them to be able to fill out forms and buy Christmas presents but next to nothing about who they were before becoming parents. Come to think of it, it is scary to think of my parents as having a past and having issues like everyone else I know so I guess my lack of knowledge is mostly caused by willful blindness.
However I honestly don't understand why Ken and Vera and everyone else in this book seem to think that we are all predisposed to become copies of our parents. If most of us became like that then the world wouldn't change much. I know Vera realized this in the end but if she could have come to that conclusion sooner a lot of mess would have been avoided.
