Ways of Seeing by John Berger

every argument in this book is suuuuuper abstract so i'd have to reread it a few times if i wanted to truly understand it all but the parts that i did understand have shifted something in me. especially chapter seven and ESPECIALLY! CHAPTER! THREE! "the surveyor and the surveyed within her as the two constituent yet always distinct elements of her identity as a woman" and "her own sense of being in herself is supplanted by a sense of being appreciated as herself by another" are two quotes that have been lingering over me ever since i've read them.

the chapters of curated artworks were also a blessing to look through. it's interesting how we automatically try to find the connections between pieces when they're grouped together. it's introduced me to the act of engaging with artwork and asking not just what is happening in the picture as if it exists on its own but also how the picture interacts with me and how it interacts with the wider world and how it interacts with itself. find me in a gallery soon walking around all the paintings like hmmm
