taun 's review for:
Cryptid Club
by Sarah Andersen
THANK YOU to Webtoon & Netgalley for sending me this ARC. All reviews are honest reflections of my own opinions, always.
Mysterious denizens of haunted woods, lochs & mansions, or simply misunderstood monsters with a relatable touch of social awkwardness & camera anxiety???
Welcome to the Cryptid Club, where Anderson draws out in her signature style some pretty funny & often understandable situations our common cryptids find themselves in. From the woes of being so unphotogenic (I mean, all those blurry Big Foot pics, am I right?), to the struggles of simply fitting in with the crowd, Anderson pulls out a few laugh out loud parallels between cryptozoology & humankind. Perhaps we aren't so different after all...
While I am usually a huge fan of Sarah Anderson's comics, in which we introverted animal loving book nerds find both relatability & the value of being seen, this one didn't quite hit that level of fun for me. The comics are unmistakably Anderson style, quirky & giggle worthy, but none that I found myself truly in stiches over or wanting to pass on to others in a 'hey, check this out, so relatable' kind of way that her other books seem to do. 3.5 stars & a thankful heart that got to read what one of my favorite cartoonists has been up to lately.
