It's dark and tense, but has a tone of lightness, but not enough to tag it as such. Volume 2 especially gets into darker interpersonal conflicts as truths emerge and grudges are made (but maybe also lightened). But there is humor and heart to the story all the same, so I do think "hopeful" could be accurate as well to a degree.
