This Way Out by Tufayel Ahmed

5.0

Coming out is hard enough, but add in that it’s an interracial relationship and you’re battling cultural and religious conflicts? Whoa boy is that a lot to sort through. Here are some of my thoughts on the various aspects of the book:

This author did a great job portraying some of the gritty realities that come along with navigating LGBTQ+ relationships. I appreciate that Amar’s own faults in the relationship were not sidestepped and presented as another layer of him minimizing himself and not effectively communicating his needs in the relationship. Joshua had his faults, because he is human, but I found that he was an overall great partner. He listened and tried his best to learn and grow in order to be a better partner for Amar, and isn’t that what we all want in a partner?

Therapy, therapy, therapy. I will forever be an advocate for it, but I’m probably biased because I work in the mental health field. Fiona was a major play in helping Amar see his shortcomings but also encouraged him to work on doing more for himself. If it weren’t for her he would have never found the thread that led him to Hussein and the group. This was the foundation for revitalizing his faith and learning that he could be both gay and a Muslim.

I can’t and won’t speak to the family dynamic because I am not educated enough on the Muslim culture to do so. I was happy to see that, in the end, a good majority of Amar’s family had his back and supported him and his marriage to Joshua.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and learning more about the the difficulty of navigating the different dynamics. I would highly recommend it!
