The Duke at Hazard
by KJ Charles
spoilers throughout
finally finished the series that led me to discovering KJ Charles - and what a joy of a book this one is. it is incredibly fast paced but still didn't feel rushed and the final showdown was everything. i kept waiting to see if any of the characters from the previous book would show up and when several did just that at the end (including my beloved robin and hart) i almost screeched out of excitement.
the commentary on aristocrat (or just general) society is biting as always and the rest of the writing just as excellent as i have come to expect.
i absolutely adored the interactions between cassian and daizell - such a pleasure to read (even when they just ripped my heart out). i mean come on? "I can't be thrown away again. I don't know why people find it so easy to throw me away." i was devastated.
daizell being so into caissan "swinging his duke around" was just so valid too lmao (i was right there with you daizell). in line with that i really liked how the use of either cassian or duke showed which side of cass was front and center (as in was he able to be himself or did he put on the mask of the duke). really well done and i was DESTROYED when it came back after daizell and cass have their big fight.
my only small gripe: i didn't connect with the side characters as much in this one, they were perfectly fine and i didn't really feel like i was missing out but none of the supporting cast really gripped me as much as the characters we get in other books from the author (gentle art of fortune hunting, will darling trilogy, etc.)
i could continue to ramble for ages but i will leave it at that! it was wonderful, the plot kept me engaged and the characters made sure i will be back for a reread in the future.
