Slaves in the Family
by Edward Ball
Very poignant story of the author investigating his South Carolina plantation family roots and their relationships with the slaves they owned. The author takes the step of recognizing and admitting the sins of his forefathers and trying to come to terms with it, including meeting with the descendants of those former slaves. The story itself is fascinating and the most interesting and rewarding parts involve the stories of the slave families and their descendants. This is a very good and often painful look at what life has been like in the Southern US.
