“It’s said that five belladonna berries are all it takes to kill someone.” Titled “Belladonna” - these berries are mentioned throughout the book, because they are deadly, but not to Signa. The book opens when she is a baby and everyone around her dies, but she lives, along with her family’s fortune.

She also frequently comes in contact with Death. She becomes so angry at seeing him - because she can, every time someone around her dies, and she is left alone again. “Death did not need to be seen; he was to be felt… Death was suffocating, and he was ice… His touch could not kill the baby he circled around, confused by her as he was fascinated by what he’d seen.” P4

It kept giving me Addie Larue vibes. Someone in my chat mentioned Mexican Gothic (which I can really see) or a spooky Secret Garden - yes!

“If she could stop Blythe from dying, the. She would stop Death. She would beat him. And if she could manage that, perhaps he’d finally leave her alone and allow her the life she’d yearned for.” P73

“Perhaps it was because Death couldn’t exist - because  he shouldn’t exist, and Signa wasn’t fully convinced that he wasn’t part of her own imagination. Someone she’d manifested in her loneliness, as a way to explain the strange things happening around her.” P100

“You have the power of the world within you Signa Farrow. You only need to embrace it.” P276

I bought this book because I was taken by the cover art when it was a pre-release. Loved the description of it in the book:
“Gilded branches curved like vines around the right side of Signa’s face and her honey-colored eye. Delicate, sculpted petals of lilac and deep green ivy wove around those branches, spilling over her head and past her blue eye. It was a gorgeous, mythical thing…” p283

“How fast a person could fall into that trap and let themselves be ensnared.” P369
