Steve & Me by Terri Irwin

emotional inspiring medium-paced

5.0

For as long as I can remember, I've called Steve Irwin an idol. In 2007, I was lucky enough to visit Australia Zoo for two days and experience all it had to offer - it felt so right being there, walking in his footsteps, but so wrong that he wasn't there himself. It was an emotional trip for 11-year-old me.

This memoir by Terri Irwin beautifully captures the on- and off-camera Steve Irwin everyone came to love and appreciate. Written almost conversationally, as if Terri were sitting down over a cup of tea and recalling personal anecdotes and fond memories of her life with Steve; you can literally feel all of the love and life poured into the words on the pages. The stories wander, and if one were to be critical, they may say that some of the anecdotes "didn't have a point" - but I would argue that this is one of the last collective memories we have of Steve, and that every story matters. The only "point" to this book is to remember and cherish the life lost and remind readers of Steve's goals of conservation and education; this book does all of the above incredibly well.
