General Comments: From bildungsroman to political thriller; the sequel to ‘Shadow and Bone’ is luke-warm. The silver-lining, solely, is the introduction of new characters, and a beautifully detailed Ravka. The evolution of our protagonists is non-existent; flimsy and inconsistent, they are all show and no tell. The lack of maturity, combined with their internal discourse and a slow-burning plot, is a bore to read.

Favourite Quote: ‘When people say impossible, they usually mean improbable.’
