Nightmares & Dreamscapes
by Stephen King
Dolan's Cadillac - A great revenge story about a schoolteacher that buries the man that killed his wife.
The End of the Whole Mess - My favorite Stephen King story of all time. There's just something about it that gets to me. It's such a beautiful, sad, combination of things I like. In this story, a writer desperately types out the story of the end of the world before his brain turns to mush. The writer's brother was a genius that discovered the cure to the greatest affliction to mankind: anger. He spreads the cure to the entire world and things are great, until the unknown side effect of Alzheimer's takes effect. The brothers relationship and the hopeful plot subverted by the devastating ending...I just love it.
Suffer the Little Children - A pretty fucked-up story that is a little unpleasant to read after what happened in Newtown in a few years ago...In this story a veteran teacher begins to suspect that her little students are actually monsters in masks. She goes to extremes to free herself from their torment.
The Night Flier - An investigative reporter for a conspiracy rag tracks down the most bizarre and bloody story of his life. He thinks a vampire has been committing murders at small airports across the US. Crazy talk. Except this time he's right.
Popsy - This story lost some impact to me because it's another vampire story immediately after a vampire story. A man who kidnaps children to pay off his gambling debts gets more than he bargained for when the kid turns out to be a vampire. If that wasn't bad enough, the kid's grandfather isn't pleased he was taken.
It Grows on You - I'm gonna be real with you - I don't remember a goddamned thing about this story. Nothing about it grabbed me. I remember my eyes scanning over the words and just NOTHING registering.
Chattery Teeth - A really cool, silly story about a guy who is saved from a murderous hitchhiker by a set of novelty chattery teeth. Really over the top and dumb, like The Mangler, except much better written.
Dedication - meh
The Moving Finger - A really long, many-knuckled finger comes out of a guy's sink and terrorizes him. Kinda gross to think about but not a great story.
Sneakers - A music mixer gets his big break working with an industry giant, but is haunted by the ghostly presence of sneakers in the Men's room. Sounds very stupid when it's put that way, but it's actually pretty good.
You Know They Got a Hell of a Band - A married couple on a road trip get lost and end up in a town called Rock and Roll Heaven. Except the name is a little more spot on then they realize.
Home Delivery - A really good zombie story about a pregnant woman who lives on a small island off Maine, and is used to only making decisions when a man advises her. The cause of the zombie outbreak are these worms from space that get into the brains of dead people and cause them to reanimate.
Rainy Season - Kind of a Children of the Corn mixed with The Lottery vibe. A couple on vacation end up the victims of a strange ritual in a very small town. Death by toads.
My Pretty Pony - Just a story about time and how your perception of it changes through life. Very nice.
Sorry, Right Number - A wife and mother receives a frantic phone call from someone she swears she recognizes, but doesn't realize the significance of it until 5 years later.
The Ten O'Clock People - Apparently, people that only smoke a certain number of cigarettes a day are able to perceive the fact that powerful people in society are actual "batpeople", kinda like Roddy Piper putting on the sunglasses in They Live.
Crouch End - Another classic King story about things going very wrong for a married couple on vacation. The streets of London hide a Lovecraftian horror that terrorize a couple.
The House of Maple Street - An evil stepfather; a house that's slowly turning into an alien spaceship; 4 kids that are sick of their Mom being abused.
The Fifth Quarter - A man's wayward friend is killed after committing a robbery with a team of others that turn on him. Their loot is stashed in a mystery place and each robber has a piece of the map. The man seeks revenge and retribution by tracking down the guys that turned on his friend.
The Doctor's Case - A Sherlock Holmes story in which Watson is the one to solve the mystery.
Umney's Last Case - Very good story about a hard-boiled detective finding out his entire existence is the creation of a writer, who is now looking to swap places with his creation.
