Absolutely one of my favorite books. 
The depiction of Clement’s shadow/ horror as so alive, intentional and lurking captures how it feels to live with an intense trauma. Marks captures the true isolation that Zanja experiences in the past, and her contrast of that with the possibility of seeing her people alive is heartbreaking. Despite these possibilities, e see Zanja choose integrity again and again.
