mfeibel 's review for:
The Shining
by Stephen King
Yay! The audiobook was finally available at my library! I have two physical copies of this book but...I know how dense King's writing can be.
Now, I knew the movie was different but I didn't realize just how many iconic moments are only in the film. It was bizarre.
After reading The Handyman Method with toxic masculinity as the villain, this feels so similar (and yeah, I know this comes first).
But I really liked that it's really just Jack being a shit. Wendy and Danny are also being driven crazy but only Jack turns to murder. Because he was already on his way to that kind of violence.
It was creepy and atmospheric and all I expected it to be.
I do wish the action had kicked in sooner. It didn't get scary for a while and I was getting a little bored. Also, there's no excuse for how often the n-word was used. We clearly knew it was a slur (it was used a such) so there was no reason for it to also be just a descriptor for Halloran.
But I'm glad to have finally read such a classic!
