Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
by Yuval Noah Harari
This is a one-volume history of humanity. I know, I know. That's an inherently ridiculous project, but I've always liked the genre. Call it a vice. Can't help feeling charmed when the author tells me, breathlessly, that he's going to get to the bottom of this civilization business in the 400-odd pages following. Anyhow, this book is what you'd get if you gave Rousseau a time machine, a bunch of modern journal subscriptions, and a sunnier disposition. Enjoyable, if you're in to that sort of thing.
