I am so excited that this is Maren's first traditionally published novel, and in true Maren fashion, it is FANTASTIC! Characters that are fun, lovable, quirky, damaged & delicious (looking at you Cillian!).
First off, I absolutely LOVED this audiobook! Stella Hunter (she is always fantastic) and Matt Sykes were a great duo for portraying Rory & Cillian! It is dual narration, & they both were so good during their chapters. How they brought the story & characters to life, expressed all the emotions that they went through, it was just fantastic!! You really felt everything that they felt, & it made the reading experience even better than anticipated (expectations are always high with how great Maren is). ESPECIALLY getting to hear Cillian's (Matt's) British accent! Talk about swoony!
Maren has such a knack for giving us characters that are so witty, but also have so much depth! Cillian for example...the bad boy fighting for a second chance in a new country with trauma that has held him hostage for so long. I love me a broken bad boy, & Cillian checked every box for me! I will not spoil it for everyone, but he will pull at your heartstrings & make you just want to hug him!!
Rory, sweet Rory! I just love her! Coaches daughter, one of the guys, sports obsessed, & clueless when it comes to connecting with a boy...she is precious! She & Cillian realize that they can help each other with what they need, & working together on "teaching" Rory quickly turns to feelings that can't be fought! I love when that happens hehe! Their chemistry is through the roof, and when they combust, it is ON! Cillian is a filthy boy who loves to eat & we love that!
PS: My new favorite microtrope may be when the bad boy shows up at the door in the middle of the night during a storm needing her....just saying...top tier!
If you can't tell, read/listen to this one! You won't regret it!
