The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks

The biggest gripe I read is that this is a rip off of Lord of the Rings. From there, most reviewers, who are already have a negative view of this book, pick apart all of the things that Sword of Shannara is not. OK, I have to agree that as Terry Brooks first book this is not his best.
But feel the need to ask: What fantasy novel is NOT based on some other story or mythology or archetype???
Authors continually borrow ideas and themes from other stories. I spend high school English studying these comparisons!!!
If anything, I feel that Terry Brooks picked up on Lord of the Rings and carried that theme and helped establish the fantasy genre. It is NOT the best fantasy novel ever, but it is an important milestone. For that Terry Brooks deserves some credit.
