The Island of Dr. Moreau
by H.G. Wells
Short but still meaningful. As much as this is a commentary on human nature and what at the time were recent scientific developments, it is a hint of the beginning of relating ethics to science. It is a big just because you can doesn't mean you should. Wells prose is great for a late 19th century writer.
