🌃 BLACKOUT is a collection of interwoven & short YA stories centering on Black love. All the stories are set in the middle of a heat wave & blackout in NYC. I’m not lying when I say it has a little of everything. Friends to lovers? Check. ✅ Enemies to lovers? Mmm hmm. ☑️ Falling in love with a stranger? Yup. ✔️ Self-love? Also yes. ✅Angst, philosophy, mental health, humor, sweetness, queer representation, it has it all—and it’s written by six of the best YA authors ever.

🌃 This book is the brainchild of the amazing Dhonielle Clayton, one of the founders of the We Need Diverse Books non-profit organization, and author of THE BELLES (one of my faves) and TINY PRETTY THINGS. Dhonielle’s story, which is set in the New York Public Library, was also my fave! In the acknowledgements, Dhonielle writes about how she got the idea for this book while she was marathoning movies and TV shows with her niece, who wondered aloud “why Black girls didn’t get big love stories.” Here’s to more of these love stories and to turning this book to a movie or mini series. Looking forward to sharing this one with my 8th graders.
