I see some reviews that basically say what I wanted to say, only much more eloquently than I could say it. The beginning, recounting his childhood in slavery and his struggles to get an education, was fascinating. Then he launched into a detailed account of fundraising activities and started moralizing and honestly to me came off as a bit judgmental of others. I do try to look through the lens of history but I thought that was a bit odd. Then he quotes lots of newspaper articles that praise him, which was a bit off-putting when contrasted with his constant assertions about how humble he was. Also I felt a deep sense of sadness whenever he talked about his life’s work, Tuskegee Institute, which unfortunately now is mostly infamous for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, maybe a bit for the airmen of WWII. What would Washington say today of the future of the race? How would he feel to know what was in store for his precious institute? I wonder.
