In Memoriam by Alice Winn
5.0
I'm writing this review 2 weeks after I finished the book -- because I needed time to process it.
In Memoriam is brutal, unflinching, visceral, raw, and painful. It is filled with so much heaviness and emotional weight that at times, I felt overwhelmed at just how much it affected me.
The normalization of death was so gut-wrenching. The objective descriptions of violence showed how numb and desensitized to it the characters were becoming. The portrayal of shell-shock and trauma was heartbreaking.
But it's also more than just a sad story. It is also beautiful, touching, cautiously optimistic, and has featherlight glimmers of hope amidst never-ending tragedy that will dig deep into your heart.
The romance is grand, and the book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and what we're willing to do when we love someone.
In Memoriam is a new favorite, and has taken up space in my mind from page 1 until now, weeks after I've finished it. It deserves all the love and praise that it has received -- and I cannot recommend it enough.
