iwi 's review for:
The Goblin Emperor
by Katherine Addison
Idk this just really wasn't for me. I didn't feel like Maia had any direction and he didn't seem to care all that much that he didn't either. He /had/ to be emperor but he didn't seem to have any goal in mind for the people/land. And it wasn't clear why it would be bad to abdicate for the SIL either.
Any moment that might have been tense was rushed over.
The world building was just bland to me. There's airships just so the family can die in one, don't wonder what powers them or anything. There's Watchers that can see through the dead's eyes? But idk how it is really used in the world outside of like one police-esque case. Suddenly! When the emperor is attacked the guard has death magic to smite the guy? But never mentioned again. I was really looking forward to the world building but it was so minimal.
I'm okay with slow stories and character driven stories, but I just didn't find anything interesting here.
