The Bees
by Laline Paull
This book is a bit of a strange one - overall, I enjoyed it but it's difficult to feel excited about it. I didn't really get hooked until the last third or so of the book, which I then finished in one sitting.
I don't think I've ever read a book as action-packed but in parts, this actually became quite tedious. It was like... Oh, Flora 717 has miraculously and against all odds evaded death from ANOTHER wasp/police bee/bird/weather related event, just the same as the last chapter, and the one before that... Not sure if this was intended as character building or to keep the reader interested but it didn't add anything for me. I read another review which suggested that all the threats to the bees were meant to instill the message that our real-life bees are in trouble but I think the bees in this story were too anthropomorphised for me to pick up on this message... Maybe that says more about the way my brain works though
