I wanted to love this but after Part I, my interest dwindled. Everything about this is compelling from the time period to the characters to the romance but it didn’t work together overall.

For me, the most fascinating parts of this book was Zhu’s time at the monastery and Ouyang’s identity struggles. I didn’t find the wlw romance compelling. In fact, I’d say Ouyang’s contrasting feelings towards his potential love interest was more interesting as there was more complexity there. However, the character arcs for the two of them were well done. I like how Ouyang’s entire personality was “might as well.”

Ultimately, I was bored for a lot of it. I expected more fantasy than we got. Not sure if I’ll check out the sequel.
