Ink and Ore
by Hayley Whiteley
"War was a cruel twist of fate, and they were all pawns in it."
My goal this year is to explore different genres, and this book nailed it in both YA and Fantasy! I've always hesitated to read fantasy novels because the idea of understanding the intricate world-building requires dedicated note-taking and rereading sentences and paragraphs to understand any of it. lol Names, places, worlds, and magic are not my forte, even if I enjoy the book. However, this novel not only defied those expectations but also proved to be incredibly fluid and effortless!
Discovering the distinctive personality traits of each character throughout was enthralling and added significantly to the character-driven narrative. One of my favorite parts of this book was the dedicated, driven best friend duo - Brenna and Katiel, and the strength they convey throughout their adventures.
The magic in the book was incredibly unique, unlike anything I have read in any other fantasy. It's amazing!
Hayley also knows how to beautifully weave a story with perfectly placed twists and turns and land an ending with you wanting more without it feeling abrupt. I cannot wait to read the other books in The Kerafin Chronicles and I highly recommend everyone pick this one up, too!
*Multiple POV
*Perfect blend of mystery/no spice romance/fantasy/YA
*Fluid, whimsical writing
*Lgbtq rep
*Character-driven
