Witches by Brenda Lozano
4.0

Was looking for a book on magic that followed fantastical magic and witches, GOT MORE THAN I BARGAINED FOR.

Jeez this book was a trip, and I mean a good trip. Firstly I loved the two perspectives and hearing about their lives and their experience with the language. Feliciana, a curandera in a family where the Language was used by curanderos, and Zoe, a hispanic journalist who's also experienced the Language. The story ties the two together through their shared experiences with the Language and the Book.

The idea of Zoe being able to connect and use the Language was very interesting, and I loved hearing about Feliciana and her cousin, Paloma, a transgender woman who faced transgressions from others and would eventually drop the language because of her relations with a man (being no longer clean). I also loved how this novel talked about gender and culture, as well as politics.

I was not entirely understanding why the author(s) chose to repeat lines/words often, but then again maybe that's just a me thing. 4/5
