The time travel concept is what initially drew me to read The Seven Year Slip. Though I don't read much romance, I thought perhaps romance intertwined with fabulism would work for me. Nope! Through reading this book, I discovered that I hate the romance trope of "insta-love." The two protagonists of Seven Year Slip spend only a handful of days together before they are absolutely and totally in love. I found that to be unbelievable and silly. I could not suspend my own disbelief for the sake of their romance.

((Quick aside related to silliness: gray eyes and auburn hair on a man only ever happens in romance novels. I read enough romance in my younger years to know that this is a trope too.))

In addition to the romance, The Seven Year Slip is also a meditation on grief. However, I found that aspect of the novel to be as underdeveloped as the love story. Spoiler alert: Clementine is given the opportunity to see her aunt again in the past and then the scene ends and is never picked back up. Seriously! Since almost as many chapters focused on Clementine's grief as focused on her romance, why couldn't readers know what happened with her aunt when they were reunited?

Overall, I think this book was just fine. And absolutely not for me.
