The General in His Labyrinth by Gabriel García Márquez
5.0

As a project whilst I was in Colombia, I tried to take a picture with every single Simón Bolívar statue that I saw. After a few months I found that I had taken 30 pictures and that was without seeking them out, Colombia is obsessed with this man. During this project a friend encouraged me to read this book, as there is no better telling of the last few months of Bolívar's life then Márquez's story. I would honestly say the weight of the story as well as the in depth character exploration makes this novel one of the finest I have ever read. Easily my favourite by Márquez. Many will say to start with One Hundred Years of Solitude, yet this is the honestly a much easier and more coherant introduction of Marquez's writing.
