Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher
4.0
Once again I wish there were half-stars when it came to ratings - I'd give it three and a half, maybe 3.75.
I love the series premise and the male characters are all very strong and excellently written. The female characters, on the other hand... Not so much. It is, unfortunately, a bit of a theme I've observed when it comes to male authors trying to write strong female characters - they really just can't get into our heads very well, and either the ladies are pretty strong but more inclined to jump into bed with anything that moves, or they're overly emotional and keep wishing for some big strong man to come rescue them. A friend of mine said it best, I think - Male Authors are more inclined to write female characters as "I'M A GIRL! AND I AM STRONG!" and Female Authors are more "I'm strong. Being a girl has nothing to do with it."
That aside, though, I as I said, I really like the premise of the series, and if you take out the tenancy to dwell and think emotionally verses logically with all the ladies (SPOILER ALERT, VAGUE THOUGH IT MAY BE

with the exception of one, who - in an effort of subterfuge by the author to attempt to prevent us from knowing she's a girl - is written to appear both boy and warrior right from the get-go, thus falling into the whole "You bet your ass I'm strong. Why the F#&k should you care whether my reproduction organs are internal or external?!" catagory mentioned previously. ;) )

everyone is pretty awesome in their own right. The world Butcher builds is quite vivid and detailed, too, in addition to being a unique take on the typical fantasy worlds.
