An Emotion of Great Delight
by Tahereh Mafi
A 4.5 for sure. Shadi saw herself as a normal American teenager, but her classmates saw her as an Iranian Muslim. After 9-11, that wasn't an easy thing to be. Shadi's dad was ill, her mom devastated, her brother dead, and her sister indifferent. Shadi was just trying to hold it all together so that she didn't put more pressure on the family. To top it all off, her best friend dumped her. So she had no one to talk to, except maybe the friend's brother. A very heart-rending look into the lives of Muslim Americans after 9-11.
