I actually DNF’d this book ~8 years ago when I first purchased it. Honestly, it wasn’t a good first King book to try and read and I just didn’t have the bandwidth to appreciate it at the time.
Reading it now I can say that Carrie is by far one of the most compelling and horrific characters I have read by King. She is both truly terrifying and so intimate and vulnerable and innocent. I think the mix is what makes her so unforgettable. At first I was not vibing with the style and format of this book, but by the end it helped usher along the story and undertone where I actively enjoyed the awkward breaks in the narrative.
Ultimately, the pacing is a bit rough. This is especially true if you are unfamiliar with how much King can drag out a scene, so again not recommended to be his first work you read.
Read this, then watch the original movie. You can ignore the remake tbh.
