The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson
3.0

This book as intriguing but lacked a lot of action that could have occurred earlier in the plot. I did enjoy this book so I would give it 3.5 stars. It may not be my favorite book, but I sincerely enjoyed it.

Joel attends a school called Armedius in the island of New Britainia (sorry if that is misspelled!). This school isn't like a typical school we know. Of course there are classes like math, English, and history; however these classes are centered around one thing: Rithmatics. Rithmatists are like royalty in the school, since not many students that attend are like them. To be a rithmatist means you learn to duel with chalk creations, take normal courses plus rithmatic classes, and must be prepared to fight the wild chalklings in Nebrask. Joel is not a rithmatist, he is the son of a female custodian and a chalkmaker. Joel truly wants to be a rithmatist since he knows almost every aspect of rithmatics and dueling. When he gets the opportunity to study the disappearances of several rithmatic students with a rithmatic's professor, he jumps at the opportunity. Through these investigations he learns secrets of his past and of everyone he knows. Also he meets his witty, crazy, and bitter rithmatist friend Melody (who has no desire to be a rithmatist).

This was a good read and I plan on reading the sequel. To me the "magic" in it is loosely based around concepts of geometry and science which was interesting to learn about. This book also has fantastic illustrations through out. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure, and mystery.
