The Wapshot Chronicle by John Cheever
3.0

There are passages in this book that are profoundly beautiful and so descriptive that they stay in my mind as if I had actually experienced them. My frustration with this novel is the pieced-together format of the chapters. These seem like a series of short stories. Some share the same characters, but there isn't a sense of the passage of time. Each chapter feels as if it is happening at the same time as the others, and that doesn't jibe with the narrative. I also had trouble recognizing the motivation of some of the characters in the story. The women, in particular, behave dramatically, but it was difficult to understand why they were doing what they were doing.
The chapters written in the style of a shorthand journal went on much longer than I wanted and were difficult to read. They added an element to the character of the father in the story, but they are essentially a story outline for another book.
