I loved this story. The book begins at that iconic scene from the movie at the mountain with that last cannon, but deviates from the movie when Shang is injured instead of Mulan. The entire (large) portion of the book where we’re reading about their time in the Diyu is captivating. You really feel the sadness, the stress, the hope and the determination with Mulan during her journey there. It added some great complexity to this bad-ass Disney character as we get to delve into her true feelings, fears and motives around her choice to become Ping. This book keeps you at the edge of your seat until the end - that combined with the little moments and lines from the movie thrown in there, make it so great and impossible to put down. Would recommend to any Mulan fan, and really to anyone who loves to read about a strong determined woman!
