Beasts of Ruin
by Ayana Gray
4.5
This world and these characters are so complex and well thought out that it is incredibly easy to get sucked into the book and not come out of it for hours. Ekon and Koffi find themselves on separate journeys for much of the book after Fedu’s actions at the end of the previous book and it was interesting to learn more about them individually. Koffi gains confidence and accepts her powers more freely. Ekon finds a surprising place in a travel lounge merchant caravan. The addition of Tempe and Safiya really helped Ekon, especially Safiya who challenged him and made him look beyond Koffi. Koffi being with more darajas increased her understanding of the magic and herself. Her goal of finding her daraja clan was very interesting.
I will say the addition of some characters as potential love interests was an interesting choice after spending the whole first book really getting readers to cheer for Ekon and Koffi.
Once again I love all the African culture and creatures (both mythological and inspired by real life) within the story.
Can’t wait to read the final book.
