Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country
by Patricia Evangelista

I enjoyed the author's use of language rules to document Duterte's campaign. It makes you think about how powerful language can be when used to influence.
This book was very heavy, I found myself reacting physically to many parts. But somehow I kept wanting to read, to understand the aftermath and people's reactions. It sheds light on the complexities of human nature in politics.I particularly liked the parts where she covered individuals who had votes for Duterte and in subsequent chapter, their immense regret when the killings became reality. I questioned why people would vote for someone who makes a promise of killing but I'm coming from a place of privilege as I live in a place that prides itself in public safety. As Pat covers the various persons involved from the citizens to the police to the killers, I start to understand why certain decisions were made.
